These are select images from a series titled “Auto-Portrait,” 1996 – 2000.
My friend Matthew showed me how to take head-to-toe self-portraits using a photo booth. At the time, my local 24-hour Rexall Drugs store happened to have a photo booth. So whenever I had the chance, I would stop by there to take either a single or a series of self-portraits. Not having anyone behind the camera allowed me to be less inhibited and therefore less camera-shy. I liked the fact that the results were often accidental and unpredictable. I rarely planned ahead what to wear or how to pose for the camera. The few exceptions were if I used props to express a specific idea I had in mind.
